Gin originated in Holland in the late 17th Century and was brought to England by the returning soldiers around the turn of the century. It became popular with British soldiers occupying Holland who called it "Dutch Courage” and brought it back to England where it became the favourite drink of the poor. The drink known as "jenever”, which is Dutch for juniper, had been created as a medicine by a Dutch chemist who had distilled from a grain spirit that he flavoured with juniper berries. It was thought to have real medicinal properties, so was only sold in chemist shops. All Gin is flavoured with juniper berries and usually other botanicals like lemon, coriander, angelica, liquorice roots, bitter almonds and orange peel. Each distiller guards the secret of his own botanicals, since they provide the only characteristic distinguishing one brand from another. Drinkswell offers a wide selection of Gins from the base London Dry Gin upwards to the more premiums such as Hendricks, Blackwoods, Citadelle and Millers, including many Export and Navy Strength Gins.
