Orval 33cl

Orval, a Belgian Trappist brewery, makes only one beer - but what a beer... The nose is very hoppy and extremely fruity in a citrus sense. Estery, pear-drop notes are also present, along with appley notes very reminiscent of strong cider. The head itself is large, loose, rocky, high-rise and apparently perpetual, with an extremely bitter taste. In the mouth Orval is remarkably light, lively and foamy. It has an intense hoppy bitterness, again with fruity notes (grapefruit, lemon, orange zest) and a spicy hint of cinnamon or nutmeg. There is no sweetness discernible anywhere in the beer, although the malt character comes through as a darker, grainy flavour. It is also perfectly carbonated - lively without being too fizzy. It is worth noting that mixing the yeast in gives the beer a much smoother, vanilla character, playing down the hops a little. Finish is chiefly complex hop flavours, dry but sharp and tart, with a very bitter, grapefruity, long-lasting aftertaste. Despite its low strength, Orval is a staggeringly complex and utterly delightful beer.
