Durham Evensong Bitter a Bottle conditioned Ale, and what a absolute gusher. This is an Old Ale a beer that is designed to keep for longer because of the higher alcohol content, based on a recipe from 1937 for Whitaker's Old Tom. A deep ruby red beer; very dark but with a clarity that is clear and bright. Light roast malts on the aroma. Durham Evensong Bitter starts off with a hoppy bitterness that soon develops into a deep caramel maltiness. There is also a slight sweetness in there, that are evened out by a citrus twang that makes the beer become a little tart and slightly bitter. In the finish and aftertaste a hint of chocolate and red wine fruitiness comes through. Deeply gorgeous
