Black Sheep Ale brewed in the heart of North Yorkshire at Masham. The Black Sheep Brewery was set up by Paul Theakston, who left the family brewery Theakston's when it was taken over by Scottish & Newcastle; hence the name as he became the Black Sheep of the family. Black Sheep beer pours a slightly hazy deep amber colour, with the head portly in size and frothy in texture, the colour a winsome light tan, which leaves behind a nice coating of lace. Black Sheep has a very hoppy aroma and flavour. A lively beer but surprisingly light on the palate, there is noticeable fruity malt and caramel in the middle, with perhaps a little burnt oak in the mouth. However, most of the flavour seems to come from its bitterness and hop character, with a long bitter finish - a sound session beer.
