Austria Samichlaus Beer 33cl

Samichlaus beer pours dark brown with a few bubbles but practically no head. The aroma is extremely rich - treacly, Christmas puddingy malt, caramel, a touch of red brambly fruit, with a dash of brandy-like spirits and coffee liqueur. In the mouth the malt and alcohol are again dominant, with rich, dark, sweet caramel and toffee, cherries, almonds, marzipan and treacle. There is a cloying, burning alcohol warmth, again brandylike in character. Although it was not served from a fridge, the Samichlaus clearly benefits from being warmed a little in the hand - more complexity becomes apparent with dark chocolate, light phenolic notes and touches of wood. The aftertaste is predictably heavy, treacly and long lasting.
