One of the oldest wine growing regions in the world, with a viticultural history dating back to the 6th Century BC, France is the source for many wine varietals including Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay that are now planted throughout the world. French wines are labeled according to the regions where they are made (Sancerre, Chablis, Cote de Beaune, Margaux, etc.), which holds true to the tradition that French soils are so distinct that the placement of vines is the ultimate production factor, not the grapes themselves. With so many distinctive growing regions, unique terroirs, and styles of wine the best way to learn and understand French wines is to taste them (especially with the accompaniment of food, it is the French way, of course).
