Fortified Wines » Vermouth
Vermouth is classed as a fortified wine which is flavoured with aromatic herbs and spices which are blended in secret recipies that are closely-guarded secrets. Antonio Benedetto invented vermouth in 1786 and chose its name because he was inspired by a German wine fortified with wormwood, a herb most famously used in distilling absinthe. The modern German word Wermut means both wormwood and vermouth. The herbs were originally used to hide the raw flavours of cheap wine, giving a slightly medicinal flavour.
