Gordon Scotch Ale and other in this style derived from when the Belgians had a taste for Scotch Ales since they were introduced into Belgium by Scottish soldiers during the second world war. A Scotch Ale is close in style to a Northern Brown Ale, and, apart from a decent malt flavour, are largely unremarkable. When John Martin arranged to have Scotch Ales imported into Belgium he demanded a higher alcohol content which transforms an otherwise ordinary beer into something quite sublime. Although also available in Britain as McEwans No 1 Champion Ale the strength of the home brew is limited to 7.3%. McEwans is a good malty brew, but Gordon's Scotch Ale has a whiskey edge - it is smokey, damn sweet, intensely fruity and mindblowingly tasty! Definite hop bite, but it takes second place to the big malt profile. This is a neglected classic.
