Gouden Carolus D'or, "The Emperor's Beer" pours a hazy copper colour with a thin, tan head. Complex nose of port wine, fruit, Apples are all over. I'm beginning to see that most of the beers from Het Anker are really very fruity. Red grape, plum, apricot, fig, caramel, dark candy sugar, and a light touch of alcohol exist. The body is appropriately thick without becoming cumbersome. The flavour resides mostly within the realm of sweetness with a touch of roasted or bitter malt giving balance. The bitterness of the hops also try to enter the fray. Gouden Carolus D'or is extremely rich and full-bodied, sweet and decadent as a Viennese torte, this seems quite unlike any other Belgian Strong, strange wonderful and unique. A classic, a masterpiece, fit for kings
