Abbaye des Rocs 75cl
Abbaye des Rocs is a farm brewery in Montignies-sur-Roc, in the Belgian Province of Luxembourg, it was started by a businessman as a weekend hobby. Since the farm is on the site of an old monastery, the beers have more claim to the title 'abbey beer' than some, and they've won a reputation for being high-quality, complex, bottle-conditioned and robustly strong: even the wheat beer, Blanche des Honelles, weighs in at an uncharacteristically hefty 6% ABV. Luckily, the beers justify taking your time: Abbaye des Rocs the flagship product, has much to linger over. It's one of those "dark triples", ruby-dark and rich but at high strength. There is some head, which soon subsides to lace, and the beer has an intense aroma full of wood, damp rolling tobacco, and a musty melon sweetness. The woodiness continues into the palate, which is predominantly sweet and malty, though not at all cloying, and bursting with fruit: melons, cherries, raspberries and mandarins, with flashes of warming alcohol, like a dash of brandy on a fruit salad. The tobacco notes return in the long-developing finish, with tangy hops delicately balancing the delicious fruitness.
