Liefmans Cuvee Brut used to be known as Liefmans Kriek, Packaged and renamed due to the brewery's resent take over by Duvel Moortgat, this is a Cherry beer that is quite sharp on the nose, with obvious cherries, some banana and an effervescent, sherbety touch. Liefmans Cuvee Brut is rather winey in character, with sour cherries and a touch of bubblegum, almost like a wheat beer. The tart fruit is very mouth-puckering and has a cleansing, expectorant effect, quite lively on the back of the throat as well. Finish is fruity and slightly bitter, with cherries and bubblegum lingering in the aftertaste. Liefmans is a very enjoyable take on the kriek style - there is no real sweetness, so often a fault with commercial krieks, and it is refreshing and complex.
